The following areas with focus on reader expectations, purpose of writing, and appropriateness of language:
- Paragraph development - different types, qualities of good paragraphs, how to develop these building blocks of discourse.
- Essential English grammar especially grammar and punctuation essential in discourse development. Also covered is etymology.
- Business letters and e-mail. Central functions such as making requests, sending good news as well as bad news, selling products and services, and selling oneself (résumés). Attention is also paid to the format of letters and ways of making e-mail courteous and effective.
- Planning documents - essentially developing reader-orientation in writing, and shaping documents in response to potential reader's needs, level and expectations.
- Reports and proposals - analysis of features of short and long reports and proposals written for an in-house audience and for external agencies. Help on presentation of documents is also provided. |
